Dairy goat farming shares many of the welfare challenges of cattle dairy but receives far less public and regulatory attention. Kid separation causes acute suffering — the vocalizations of separated mothers and kids reflect genuine distress that persists for days. Disbudding without analgesia inflicts significant pain on young animals. Housing systems that prevent natural social behavior, foraging, and climbing deprive goats of behaviors central to their wellbeing. As consumer interest in goat dairy grows, welfare standards have not kept pace. Reform requires mandatory analgesia for disbudding, extended suckling periods, and outdoor access requirements.
