European rabbit farming operates largely outside public awareness, yet houses millions of animals in conditions that welfare science has clearly identified as inadequate. Wire cage housing without enrichment prevents the expression of virtually all natural rabbit behaviors — running, jumping, social interaction, nesting, and burrowing. The result is chronic behavioral deprivation that manifests in stereotypic behaviors and high stress indicators. Despite EFSA recommendations and some industry commitments to improved systems, transition to park-system housing with enrichment and social housing has been slow. Consumer and legislative pressure remain essential drivers.
