Welfare Considerations

River dolphins are among the most endangered and welfare-challenged cetaceans on Earth. Unlike their oceanic relatives, they are confined to river systems that are directly impacted by intensive human use — fishing, agriculture, industry, and infrastructure. Each of these uses creates specific welfare harms: entanglement in fishing nets causes drowning, heavy metal pollution from mining causes neurological impairment, and river modifications including dams fragment populations and eliminate habitat. The loss of the baiji demonstrates that inaction leads to extinction; the welfare of remaining species — Amazon, Ganges, Indus, Irrawaddy, Tucuxi, La Plata — requires urgent action.
