Extensive rangeland cattle production involves welfare trade-offs quite different from intensive systems. Range cattle express natural behaviors to a far greater degree than confined animals — grazing, socializing, and moving across varied terrain. However, the welfare safety net of close daily monitoring is absent, meaning diseases, injuries, and difficult calvings may go undetected for extended periods. Strategic monitoring programs, predator coexistence management, and parasite control tailored to extensive systems can address these welfare risks. The behavioral welfare advantage of extensive production is real and significant despite the different management challenges it presents.
