Perch design has enormous welfare implications for companion birds. Standard smooth dowel perches found in most commercial cages are among the worst options for foot health because their uniform surface creates constant pressure on a single contact point. Chronic pressure leads to bumblefoot, a painful bacterial infection that can progress to deep tissue damage. Providing multiple perch types of varying diameter, texture, and material encourages normal gripping variation. Perch placement should allow birds to perch at different heights without tail feathers touching cage sides. Regular perch inspection and replacement as surfaces wear is essential preventive care.
