Giraffes are among the most popular zoo animals, but their complex social needs and large space requirements create significant welfare challenges in captive settings.
Giraffe welfare in zoos is challenged by the difficulty of replicating their natural social fluidity and space use. Incompatible groupings cause chronic stress for socially subordinate animals, particularly when they cannot escape dominant individuals in enclosed spaces. Foot and joint problems from standing on hard substrates cause pain that may only be detected through detailed behavioral assessment. Feeding at natural browse height rather than from ground level promotes normal neck and postural use. Some zoos have made significant investments in naturalistic enclosures with multiple browse points, variable terrain, and larger areas that allow social choices and reduce conflict.
