Welfare Considerations

Duck welfare in commercial farming is most acutely affected by denial of open water access. Ducks are waterfowl whose physiological and behavioral needs are tightly coupled to water immersion. Eye health, nasal function, and feather condition all depend on access to water deep enough for head immersion. Research demonstrates that ducks provided with open water spend significant time swimming and bathing, and show preference for it over other resources including food. Low-cost interventions including shallow tubs or sprinklers provide some welfare benefit even when full swimming ponds are impractical. Higher-welfare duck production standards require open water access and are available in some European markets.
