Parrots are highly intelligent, social, and cognitively demanding birds whose needs are frequently unmet in captive environments, leading to stereotypic and self-destructive behaviors.
A captive parrot placed in a small cage with limited social contact and no foraging opportunity is in an environment radically incompatible with its evolved needs. The result is frequently feather destruction, screaming, aggression, and other stereotypic behaviors that indicate chronic psychological distress. Even well-meaning owners are often unaware of the cognitive complexity and social requirements of these animals. Improving captive parrot welfare requires education, foraging enrichment, social companionship, and realistic assessment of whether captive keeping is appropriate.
