UV-B lighting is essential for most pet reptiles yet is widely misunderstood and poorly provided. Inadequate UV-B causes metabolic bone disease and chronic suffering in millions of captive reptiles.
Reptile welfare is systematically compromised by inadequate UV-B provision across the pet trade. Metabolic bone disease caused by vitamin D3 deficiency from insufficient UV-B is one of the most common preventable conditions in captive reptiles. Animals develop soft, deformed bones that cause fractures from normal activity and chronic pain from skeletal abnormalities. The insidious nature of MBD is that it develops gradually and is often not noticed until significant damage has occurred. UV-B meter testing of enclosures reveals that many hobbyist setups provide inadequate UV-B even when UV-B bulbs are used, due to incorrect distance, old bulbs, or wrong spectrum. Species-appropriate UV-B provision should be considered non-negotiable in reptile welfare standards.
