Human infrastructure including roads, fences, power lines, and buildings injures and kills wildlife at enormous scale, yet many of these harms can be mitigated through design changes.
Modern human infrastructure creates a vast network of hazards for wildlife that did not exist in evolutionary history. Animals have no instinctive avoidance of vehicles, glass windows, power lines, or wire fences, leading to catastrophic injury and death rates. Beyond lethality, many injured animals survive with traumatic injuries requiring rehabilitation or resulting in chronic suffering. Reducing infrastructure-caused harm requires systemic changes to how we design roads, buildings, fences, and power systems.
