Wolverine research using non-invasive methods is transforming what we know about this elusive carnivore while minimizing welfare impacts that traditional capture-based studies impose.
Wolverine research welfare represents an important case study in the shift toward non-invasive wildlife science. Traditional research requiring capture exposes wolverines to significant stress from trapping, immobilization, and handling in harsh winter conditions. GPS collar attachment, while providing valuable movement data, requires capture that is associated with injury risk and stress. Non-invasive alternatives including hair snares, camera traps, and scat-based genetic analysis gather much of the same population information without capturing individuals. The welfare science case for non-invasive methods is strengthening as technology improves their efficiency. Research programs that explicitly commit to minimizing capture and prioritizing non-invasive methods both improve animal welfare and often produce better data from less disrupted individuals.
