Pre-slaughter stunning of poultry is required in many jurisdictions but quality varies enormously. Ensuring effective stunning is one of the most scalable welfare improvements in commercial poultry processing.
Poultry slaughter welfare is a high-impact area because even small percentage failures in stunning effectiveness translate to millions of conscious animals entering the killing process. Water bath electrical stunning has inherent design limitations: birds conscious during shackling experience pain from inversion, and current distribution through water is uneven. Controlled atmosphere systems expose birds to anesthetic gas while still in their transport modules, eliminating shackling of conscious birds entirely. The welfare improvement of CAS over water bath stunning is clear and substantial, but capital costs have slowed adoption. Some certifications now require or give preference to CAS-equipped facilities. Consumer awareness that stunning quality varies between producers enables purchasing pressure for CAS adoption.
