Many companion reptiles suffer from metabolic bone disease and other preventable conditions caused by inadequate UV-B lighting, a fundamental welfare need that owners often overlook.
Companion reptiles with insufficient UV-B lighting develop weakened bones, muscle tremors, and permanent deformities. Many owners are unaware that standard light bulbs provide no UV-B, and that UV-B bulbs must be positioned correctly within specific distances and replaced regularly even when still producing visible light. Improving owner education about UV-B requirements is one of the highest-impact welfare interventions available for companion reptile populations.
