Behavioral enrichment programs in modern zoos range from superficial props to deeply effective interventions that genuinely improve animal welfare and psychological wellbeing.
The presence of enrichment does not guarantee welfare improvement. Objects placed in enclosures that fail to engage the species-specific motivational systems of the animal provide minimal benefit and may simply clutter the space. High-quality enrichment requires understanding what specific behaviors each species is strongly motivated to perform and designing interventions that enable those behaviors. A bear that can forage for hidden food, manipulate puzzle feeders, and access water for play is in a fundamentally different welfare state than one with a rubber ball in its enclosure.
