Tilapia is one of the most widely farmed fish species globally, and improving welfare conditions in tilapia aquaculture offers enormous potential impact given the scale of production.
The welfare of farmed tilapia receives far less attention than salmon or shrimp despite the enormous scale of production. These fish experience the same physiological stress responses to crowding, poor water quality, and rough handling as other farmed species. The good news is that improving tilapia welfare through better water management, appropriate stocking density, and humane handling practices is technically straightforward and economically viable. Consumer awareness and certification demand are the primary drivers needed to motivate producer adoption.
