Veal production has historically involved some of the most welfare-compromising practices in livestock farming, though significant reforms are improving conditions in many markets.
Traditional white veal calves spent their entire lives in individual stalls unable to turn around, fed deliberately iron-deficient diets to produce pale flesh, and deprived of social contact with other calves. The welfare suffering from this system was extreme. Rose veal systems allowing calves to move freely, consume iron-sufficient forage, and socialize with other calves represent a dramatically improved alternative that links dairy calf welfare with viable market demand. Consumer awareness and purchasing choices directly incentivize the transition.
