Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is the most common progressive condition in senior cats, but early detection and evidence-based management can substantially improve quality and length of life.
Cats with undetected or mismanaged CKD experience progressive nausea, weakness, and discomfort as toxins accumulate and kidney function declines. The condition is managed rather than cured, but high-quality management can provide comfortable additional years of good quality life. Key welfare interventions include early detection through screening, phosphorus-restricted renal diets, adequate hydration, blood pressure management, and treatment of secondary conditions including hypertension and anemia. Owner education and engagement with management protocols is critical to good outcomes.
