Amphibians dying from chytrid fungal disease experience progressive physiological deterioration from skin dysfunction — the skin that normally regulates breathing, water balance, and electrolytes becomes non-functional. The cardiac arrest that results from electrolyte imbalance may be preceded by significant distress as physiology fails. The welfare harm occurs across species that in some cases went from millions of individuals to extinction within years of Bd arrival. Biosecurity against further spread, probiotic research, and captive assurance programs represent the most impactful welfare and conservation interventions.
