Refinement is often the most immediately actionable of the 3Rs because it does not require replacing experiments or reducing animal numbers — it requires improving conditions for animals already being used. Simple additions — nesting material, tunnels, and shelters for rodents; positive reinforcement training for primates to cooperate with procedures — reduce acute and chronic stress substantially. The challenge is translating established refinement science into routine laboratory practice, where time pressures and institutional culture can resist change. Regulatory bodies and funding agencies increasingly require evidence of refinement implementation in grant applications.
