Free-range labeling encompasses a wide spectrum of actual welfare outcomes. A hen with nominal outdoor access to a muddy strip of land a long walk from the house entrance has very different welfare from one ranging across a vegetated pasture close to the house. Range quality — vegetation cover, predator deterrence, range size, and distance from housing — determines whether outdoor access translates into genuine welfare benefit. Pasture-raised certification with rigorous space standards and range quality requirements offers a more reliable welfare signal than generic free-range claims.
