Orangutan welfare and conservation are inseparable from global commodity supply chains. Palm oil is present in approximately half of all packaged supermarket products, and its production has been the dominant driver of orangutan habitat destruction. Individual orangutans displaced by deforestation may survive for a period in degraded habitat or in human-settled areas, where they are vulnerable to electrocution, vehicle strikes, and retaliatory killing. Rehabilitation programs for displaced and orphaned orangutans require years of care before any chance of release. Consumer pressure on palm oil sourcing certification, particularly through RSPO standards with deforestation clauses, remains the highest-leverage individual action available.
