Stocking density in broiler production is among the most directly controllable welfare parameters — farmers choose the density at which to stock their sheds. Higher densities increase profitability per square meter but at welfare cost: more competition for resources, worse litter quality from accumulated moisture, higher ambient ammonia levels, and greater incidence of leg problems and hock burn. The density reduction specified in the Better Chicken Commitment from typical commercial 34-38 kg to 30 kg per square meter is achievable with minimal capital investment and delivers measurable welfare improvement. Lower density combined with slower-growing breeds amplifies the welfare benefit.
