Salamanders face a devastating emerging pathogen — Bsal chytrid fungus — that causes skin disease and mass mortality, threatening the most diverse salamander fauna on Earth in North America.
Bsal chytrid disease causes severe welfare harm through progressive skin ulceration that destroys the respiratory and osmoregulatory function of salamander skin. Infected fire salamanders in Europe experienced mass die-offs with individuals dying from multiple skin lesions over days to weeks. The welfare scale of a North American Bsal outbreak — given the enormous diversity and abundance of salamander species on the continent — is potentially catastrophic. Import bans on salamander trade represent the most direct preventive welfare intervention. Research into probiotic treatments and antifungal management that could be applied to wild populations may offer future mitigation options.
