Dehorning embodies the hardest trade-offs in conservation welfare: an intervention that causes certain, measurable harm in order to prevent probable, larger harm. The immobilization alone creates acute physiological stress — elevated cortisol, muscle damage from lying on hard ground, risk of hyperthermia. The cutting of the horn, though the horn itself lacks nerve endings near the base cut line, leaves a wound vulnerable to infection. Beyond the procedure, the dehorned rhino lives for years in a diminished state, unable to use its primary social and defensive tool. Whether this trade-off is justified depends heavily on local poaching pressure and the availability of alternative protections like intensive ranger presence.
