Turbine collisions kill raptors instantaneously in most cases — the welfare impact of the death itself is brief, but the population-level effects of removing top predators are significant. Raptors have low reproductive rates, long generations, and are slow to recover from elevated mortality. The welfare dimension extends beyond individual deaths: juvenile raptors learning migration routes are disproportionately killed, disrupting the transmission of learned knowledge across generations. The technology to dramatically reduce raptor mortality exists — camera and radar systems that trigger turbine shutdowns are proven and increasingly affordable. The barrier is cost and regulatory requirements. Stronger mandatory mitigation standards would align renewable energy expansion with wildlife welfare.
