Cattle in feedlots lack the ability to seek shade under trees, wallow in water, or migrate to cooler areas — all natural heat regulation behaviors. When ambient heat and humidity exceed physiological tolerance thresholds, cattle experience respiratory distress, metabolic disruption, and if severe enough, death. The solutions are known and affordable: shade structures, sufficient water trough space, and evaporative cooling systems can dramatically reduce heat stress impacts. The barrier is that these interventions are typically not legally required, and the production costs of heat stress are partially externalized to the animals rather than fully internalized by producers. Regulatory minimum standards for shade and water access would align producer incentives with animal welfare.
