At the individual level, animals in fragmented habitats without connectivity face resource limitation, inbreeding-related health consequences, and the stress of living in small, boundary-rich territories. Animals that attempt to cross fragmented landscapes without corridor infrastructure risk vehicle collision, predation, and starvation when crossing inhospitable matrix habitat. At the population level, corridors facilitate genetic diversity that prevents the immunological and reproductive health consequences of inbreeding — welfare impacts expressed across generations. The design of corridors for welfare, as well as for genetic connectivity, would prioritize elements that allow foraging and shelter along the corridor, not just transect passage. Wide corridors with food, water, and cover within the corridor itself provide welfare benefits beyond the genetic rescue that narrow transit corridors offer.
