Rising global temperatures are intensifying heat stress in livestock, creating growing welfare burdens in major production regions and driving adaptation challenges for the agricultural sector.
Heat stress in livestock is one of the most direct links between climate change and animal welfare. As global temperatures rise, animals in both intensive and extensive production systems will face increasing frequency and intensity of heat events that exceed their physiological tolerance. The welfare impacts are measurable and serious: panting, reduced movement, bunching at water sources, mortality, and immune suppression that increases disease vulnerability. These impacts are not evenly distributed — intensive production systems in tropical and subtropical regions, where animals are already close to heat tolerance thresholds, face the most acute welfare risks. Climate adaptation for livestock welfare requires both immediate measures (cooling infrastructure, water access, shade) and longer-term structural changes (breed adaptation, production system redesign, and in some cases, geographic redistribution of production).
