Trout welfare is shaped largely by the physical and chemical properties of the water they live in — dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, and ammonia levels create the baseline conditions for wellbeing or suffering at every moment of their lives. When water quality is poor, trout experience physiological stress continuously, not just during acute handling events. Fin erosion — one of the most visible trout welfare indicators — reflects chronic environmental and crowding stress that compounds over the months of a production cycle. The welfare improvements available in trout farming are largely husbandry improvements: maintaining water quality within optimal ranges, reducing crowding duration during management procedures, and adopting welfare-positive slaughter methods.
