Pangasius catfish and Nile tilapia are two of the most widely farmed fish species globally, with welfare challenges that reflect the conditions of high-volume, low-cost aquaculture.
Pangasius and tilapia represent the high-volume, low-cost end of aquaculture production — species selected partly for their tolerance of suboptimal conditions, enabling production at scales and densities that other fish could not survive. But tolerance of poor conditions does not indicate absence of welfare impact: studies show that even robust species show stress-related physiological responses at high densities, and slaughter by suffocation or live chilling without prior stunning causes death over extended periods with associated distress indicators. The sustainability certifications that appear on Western market pangasius and tilapia primarily address environmental concerns — chemical use, water quality, effluent management — rather than fish welfare. Consumers seeking welfare-positive choices need to look beyond environmental certification to schemes that address fish welfare outcomes specifically.
