Conservation breeding programs create welfare obligations at multiple stages: the captive animals that live and reproduce in zoo facilities, the animals transported for breeding purposes, and the offspring that may eventually be reintroduced to the wild. Each of these stages involves welfare trade-offs that must be weighed against conservation benefits.
