Catfish welfare in both US and Southeast Asian aquaculture is shaped primarily by water quality management and slaughter methods. Pond aquaculture creates inherent dissolved oxygen instability that, when poorly managed, leads to mass mortality events — welfare disasters for thousands of individuals simultaneously. Day-to-day suboptimal oxygen and temperature conditions cause chronic physiological stress that impairs immune function, increases disease susceptibility, and reduces welfare throughout the production cycle. Slaughter by suffocation — removing fish from water and allowing them to die over many minutes — causes measurable distress and is inconsistent with the evidence that catfish can experience negative states. Pre-slaughter electrical or percussive stunning is feasible and practiced in higher-welfare contexts. The gap between what welfare science recommends and what standard catfish production delivers represents an achievable improvement with modest investment.
