Welfare Considerations

The expansion of farm animal welfare science to include positive emotional states represents a genuine paradigm shift in how welfare is conceptualized and measured. The original Five Freedoms framework — freedom from hunger, pain, fear, distress, and ability to express normal behavior — is largely oriented toward absence of negatives. The emerging framework adds a positive requirement: animals should experience genuine pleasure, engagement, and positive social experiences, not merely the absence of suffering. This shift matters practically: an animal that is not in pain, not hungry, and not diseased may still be living a life of deprivation if it has nothing to investigate, no social play, and no positive interactions with its environment. Designing farms that actively provide positive experiences — novel objects, varied environments, positive human contact — produces measurably better welfare than simply eliminating the obvious negatives.
