Vulture populations across Africa and Asia are collapsing from poisoning, persecution, and trade, creating welfare crises for individual birds and ecological consequences for the ecosystems they serve.
Vulture welfare from poisoning involves death by one of two mechanisms: renal failure from NSAIDs like diclofenac over 24-48 hours, or convulsive death from organophosphate and carbamate poisons within hours. Neither is humane. The scale of poisoning events — hundreds of birds from single incidents — creates welfare disasters that simultaneously devastate population numbers. Individual vultures dying from poison exposure experience progressive neurological and organ failure over periods ranging from hours to days. The ecological consequences cascade: vulture-depleted carcass environments attract disease vectors, extend carcass processing times, and disrupt nutrient cycling. Addressing vulture welfare requires attacking the economic drivers of poisoning — reducing poaching profit through enforcement, and reducing traditional medicine demand through consumer education.
