The intensity of this motivation is demonstrated by the persistence of vacuum dust bathing in hens given no substrate — they perform the full behavioral sequence regardless, indicating an internal drive that cannot simply be suppressed. Cage systems that prevent dust bathing leave this need chronically unmet throughout a hens laying life. Even cage-free systems may fail to provide adequate substrate depth and area for proper dust bathing. True welfare improvement requires substrate access that allows complete, effective dust bathing.
