Vietnam produces enormous quantities of pangasius catfish for global export under conditions that raise welfare questions about stocking density, water quality, and slaughter methods.
Pangasius welfare exists at the intersection of high production volume, high stocking density, and limited welfare regulation. At densities of 60-90 kg/m3, individual pangasius have extremely restricted freedom of movement and are continuously exposed to the physiological consequences of crowding: elevated cortisol, impaired immune function, and the chronic stress of near-constant social and physical contact with conspecifics. Water quality management that prevents oxygen depletion is the most critical welfare intervention available, as acute oxygen depletion events cause mass suffering and death. Certification schemes that require dissolved oxygen monitoring, stocking density limits, and welfare-positive slaughter represent meaningful welfare improvements that some Vietnamese producers have adopted.
