Mole control methods span a wide welfare range from near-instantaneous death through traps to prolonged dying through gassing. A correctly set scissor trap that kills instantly causes minimal welfare harm; a poorly positioned trap that injures without killing or a gas application that takes extended time to cause death causes significant suffering. The welfare case for live-catch and relocation is complicated by the survival challenge that relocated moles face: a mole released in unfamiliar territory must establish new tunnels rapidly in territory that may already be occupied, and may die from starvation within days if unsuccessful. The ecological role of moles — soil aeration, invertebrate predation — means that their presence provides ecosystem services that toleration and non-lethal deterrence preserves. Where control is genuinely necessary, quick-kill methods correctly deployed are more welfare-positive than gassing or slow-kill alternatives.
