Musth welfare creates a distinctive challenge for zoo elephant management: a biologically essential reproductive state that involves intense hormonal and behavioral changes that cannot be fully accommodated in zoo settings. A musth bull in a zoo with no access to estrous females remains in an intense physiological state with no normal termination mechanism; the welfare costs of prolonged musth — elevated cortisol, reduced feeding, increased aggressive stress — accumulate without the normal resolution. Hormonal suppression of musth reduces aggression but disrupts normal reproductive physiology in ways whose welfare implications are not fully understood. Wild musth bulls experience intense but time-limited states that resolve through breeding or defeat; zoo bulls may experience prolonged, unresolved musth that represents chronic welfare compromise.
