Cassowaries are powerful, solitary rainforest birds often feared by humans, yet they face serious welfare threats from habitat loss, vehicle strikes, and human feeding in North Queensland.
Cassowaries face a paradox in human relations: their dangerous reputation has created both fear and fascination, leading some people to feed them deliberately despite warnings, while others may not yield road priority to these animals. Vehicle strikes cause traumatic injuries that are frequently fatal without veterinary intervention. Injured cassowaries that reach wildlife hospitals often have multiple fractures and organ damage. Human feeding habituates cassowaries to roads and human presence, dramatically increasing their vulnerability to vehicles. Corridor restoration between fragmented rainforest patches allows cassowaries to move safely between territories without road crossings. Strict no-feeding policies backed by education and fines are essential to protect both cassowaries and the humans who encounter them.
