Positive welfare science has developed validated behavioral indicators of good cattle welfare that go beyond merely assessing the absence of disease and suffering.
Animal welfare has traditionally been assessed by what goes wrong — disease rates, injury incidence, behavioral problems. Positive welfare science asks instead what good welfare looks like and how to measure it. For cattle, positive welfare indicators include play behavior in young animals, social grooming, exploration of novel environments, and relaxed posture and ear position. These indicators provide a richer picture of welfare state than health metrics alone and can identify welfare problems before clinical signs appear. Integrating positive welfare assessment into farming practice encourages active pursuit of good welfare rather than mere absence of suffering.
