Chytridiomycosis has caused the greatest loss of vertebrate biodiversity from a single disease in recorded history. Millions of individual amphibians have died suffering deaths from this fungal infection.
Chytridiomycosis causes a prolonged and distressing death in affected amphibians. As the fungus proliferates on the skin, electrolyte disruption causes progressive lethargy, loss of righting reflex, and ultimately cardiac arrest. The time from infection to death can extend over weeks as infection progresses, during which animals experience weakness and physiological deterioration. The scale of this welfare crisis is almost incomprehensible: billions of individual amphibians have died painful deaths from chytridiomycosis since its global spread. Prevention of further spread through biosecurity in fieldwork, pet trade regulation, and aquatic biosecurity is the most immediate welfare intervention available. Probiotic treatment research offers hope for protecting populations in areas where Bd is established.
