Farmed Atlantic halibut face welfare challenges that are in many ways unique among farmed fish. The larval metamorphosis period — when they transition from swimming upright to lying flat — is a time of particular vulnerability, and poorly managed systems see high mortality and developmental abnormalities. As benthic animals, halibut require appropriate substrate on tank floors; smooth concrete surfaces cause chronic skin damage. Cannibalism in juvenile stages requires grading and separation, which is itself stressful. Stocking densities in commercial operations frequently exceed welfare-optimal levels. Improving halibut welfare requires investment in tank design, careful stocking density management, substrate provision, and research into larval rearing conditions that minimize developmental stress.
