Research has clarified the welfare impacts of stocking density, water quality parameters, handling, and slaughter methods. The key welfare improvements available — reducing stocking density, improving water oxygenation, providing adequate flow for swimming behavior, and replacing CO2 stunning with electrical stunning — are technically achievable and increasingly mandated under welfare certification schemes. CO2 stunning is of particular concern: trout show aversive behavioral and physiological responses to CO2 exposure for up to 30 seconds before losing consciousness, suggesting significant suffering. Transitioning to percussive or electrical stunning is the single highest-impact welfare improvement available in trout slaughter.
