Farmed Goose Welfare: Down, Foie Gras, and Meat Production

Geese farmed for down, foie gras, and meat face distinct welfare challenges including live plucking, force-feeding, and inadequate water access in intensive production systems.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Farmed goose welfare is affected by practices ranging from the acutely harmful — live plucking, which causes pain and stress in conscious birds — to the chronic deprivation of water access for bathing. Live plucking, still practiced where it is legal, causes feather follicle damage, behavioral distress, and risk of skin lacerations. Foie gras production from geese carries the same welfare harms as duck foie gras, with force-feeding causing hepatic lipidosis, respiratory compromise, and behavioral suppression. Even in non-foie gras production, geese are frequently housed without the open water access their biology requires. Consumer awareness of the Responsible Down Standard and rejection of foie gras products can directly influence welfare outcomes for farmed geese.
