Commercial egg production welfare involves trade-offs that vary with system quality and management. Battery cages — now banned in most developed markets — provide minimal space and deny virtually all natural behavior; their welfare profile is unambiguously poor. Enriched colonies improve behavioral freedom marginally while maintaining production advantages; welfare researchers generally consider them inadequate. Cage-free systems provide the most behavioral freedom but introduce new challenges: keel bone fractures from poor aviary design, feather pecking in high-density systems, and air quality problems from inadequate litter management. The welfare-optimal egg production system is a well-managed aviary or free-range system with moderate stocking density, good air quality, and appropriate litter — but this description does not apply to all cage-free systems. Certification standards that specify outcomes rather than simply housing type are essential.
