Herd isolation stress in cattle is an underappreciated source of welfare harm in routine farm management. Every time a cow is separated for veterinary treatment, pregnancy diagnosis, or transport, she experiences acute distress that is measurable through vocalization, heart rate, and cortisol response. This distress is not trivial — it suppresses immune function, impairs recovery from concurrent illness, and can trigger injury from escape attempts in unfamiliar handling facilities. Low-stress handling techniques developed by Temple Grandin and others address this by minimizing isolation: moving small groups rather than individuals, using buddy animals for calm company, and designing handling facilities that allow animals to see and move toward their social group during procedures.
