The farrowing crate presents animal welfare with one of its sharpest dilemmas: a system that imposes severe welfare costs on sows (preventing all movement and nesting behavior during a highly motivated biological period) while protecting piglets from crushing mortality. The welfare solution is not to accept this trade-off but to design systems that protect piglets without confining sows. Loose farrowing systems with appropriate anti-crushing features achieve comparable piglet mortality rates to crates in experienced, well-managed farms. The critical success factors are pen design (anti-crushing rails at appropriate height and angle, creep areas for piglets, good solid bedding) and farmer training and motivation. Countries that have banned farrowing crates have not experienced systematic productivity collapse — demonstrating that welfare-positive farrowing is commercially viable when management is appropriate.
