Free-range pig production represents the highest welfare standard currently available at commercial scale for farmed pigs. The ability to root in soil, wallow in mud, forage across a varied outdoor environment, and socialize in stable groups provides behavioral freedom that indoor systems — even enriched ones — cannot replicate. The welfare benefits are most clearly expressed in sow and piglet welfare: outdoor farrowing allows full nesting behavior, reduces maternal stress, and provides piglets with varied sensory environments during their critical developmental period. The management challenges are real — parasite control, sunburn in white-skinned breeds, and predator protection all require attention — but are solved by experienced producers who recognize that good welfare and good production are complementary rather than competing goals.
