Drone technology offers genuine welfare advantages over traditional wildlife monitoring methods. Conventional wildlife surveys frequently require capturing and handling animals for marking, sampling, or data collection — each intervention imposing acute welfare costs. Drones can collect comparable data non-invasively: population counts, individual identification, body condition assessment, and behavioral monitoring are increasingly possible from aerial platforms without any physical contact. The welfare improvement is most dramatic for species that are highly sensitive to disturbance (e.g., ground-nesting birds, large marine mammals) and for monitoring programs that would otherwise require repeated capture. Residual welfare concerns include propeller noise disturbance and the proximity required for high-resolution imaging; these are addressable through appropriate survey protocols and equipment design.
