Recirculating aquaculture systems offer a genuine welfare opportunity for farmed fish that depends entirely on how the technology is used. The elimination of sea lice exposure and the precise control of water quality are significant welfare improvements over open-net sea cage systems. However, the welfare potential of RAS is realized only if stocking densities are managed appropriately and water quality parameters are maintained at optimal rather than merely survivable levels. Early commercial RAS salmon operations have documented high rates of cardiovascular disease associated with the combination of high density and limited swimming space, illustrating that technological capacity for quality control does not automatically translate to welfare improvement. RAS represents the future of welfare-positive aquaculture only when operated with welfare outcomes — not just survival and growth — as explicit performance metrics.
